Gerhard van der Merwe, 7, had been wearing glasses since the age of nine months and could only see with the aid of strong lenses.
However, following an accident where he was hit in the head by a passing taxi, he amazed doctors by revealing his vision had been completely restored.
His mother Gretha van der Merwe explained that he could barely distinguish light from dark with his right eye. This resulted in him failing to see the vehicle heading towards him as he crossed the road. Following the hit, he suffered only mild concussion and the eye injury.
As the swelling went down around his eye he gradually realised he could see! Not just shapes. but everything down to the smallest detail. A sight for sore eyes indeed!
